The course will treat major theories and research findings related to the overall theme, democracy and citizenship in different educational contexts, including social and subject related perspectives. Questions that relate the overriding theme of the school are national identity, diversity, youth political participation, and comparative perspectives on the citizen in school contexts within and outside the Nordic countries. There will be a combination of lectures, comments and discussions, and all participants are invited to play an active role in the different activities.

The course is arranged as a Nordic PhD course. The course is offered in cooperation between CeHum, the Program for Teacher Education at NTNU, and with support from The Norwegian National Graduate School in Teacher Education (NAFOL). It will be particularly relevant for Nordic research students, but is also open to others.

The course is based on the given syllabus of writing a paper, which is delivered within a specified deadline after the course is completed (Dec 1, 2014). Approved course participation and paper gives 7.5 ECTS credits. And approved course participation (80%) gives 2,5 ECTS credits.

The course is offered from 6 to 9 October 2014, and takes place in the form of two half days and two full days for the dates indicated as well as social events the evening. The course is located on Campus Frescati, Stockholm University. The participants from the Nordic countries organise financing of accommodation and travel. No course fee is charged. Coffee and sandwich /cake are included. The course is taught partially in the Scandinavian languages and English depending on the lecturer.
